Natural Resources Management

ETC puts considerable emphasis on the promotion of sustainable natural resource management with active involvement of the rural and urban population that make use of such resources. Community forestry, watershed management, Integrated Pest Management, soil conservation, (agro)- biodiversity, participatory management of nature reserves are some of the fields of expertise of ETC advisors and important concerns in most of our projects.

Community-led Natural Resource Management (CNRM) is focussing on combating desertification, land and water degradation, and related bio-diversity decline. Within this theme there are two approaches:

  • Promoting local innovation in ecologically-oriented agriculture and natural resource management, by analysis Participatory Innovation Development to enhance local innovation, capacity building at all levels, policy dialogue and institutionalisation into regular Research & Development, and Multi-stakeholder partnership building to realise this.
  • Endogenous Development that aims to develop methodologies and build capacities of rural people and civil society staff to go beyond participatory approaches and make peoples’ worldviews the starting point for development, in which sustainable development is seen as a balance between material, social and spiritual wellbeing.
