Scaling up energy access through women’s economic empowerment

Since ENERGIA’s establishment in 1996, the International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy has contributed substantially to raising awareness on gender mainstreaming and to piloting innovative approaches on the topic. ENERGIA’s international program is in its fifth phase (referred to as ENERGIA Phase 5) and is scheduled to run from 2014 to 2017.

ENERGIA Phase 5 aims to support programmes of partner organisations based in Africa and Asia in empowering women entrepreneurs to scale up the delivery in line with its commitment to the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative.

The program objective is to contribute to WEE through scaling up proven business models that strengthen women-led micro and small enterprises to deliver energy services and strengthen gender mainstreaming in SE4All policy, program design and implementation at the global and national level.

Our activities:

  • The program is geared towards demonstrating concrete results on the ground by providing:
  • Direct funding for scaling up proven business models that support WEE
  • Technical support to energy access programs that adopt practical approaches to WEE, in carrying out gender assessments, planning, implementation, monitoring and documentation
  • Supports to advocacy, communications and campaigning strategies and actions geared towards ensuring the inclusion of gender goals in SE4All country plans as well as policy and program design and implementation at the global level
  • Supports to the SE4ALL Global Tracking Framework to develop indicators that tract the impact of investments on WEE
